Psara

The monument of the black ridge, the village, a swim at Limnos beach.

Συνολική βαθμολογία: 3.0/5 · 40 km² · 450 κάτοικοι

Psara is one of the most sacred places in modern Greek history. During the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829), the tiny island contributed a fleet that was instrumental in several major Greek victories. In June 1824, the Ottoman navy attacked Psara. Rather than surrender, local defenders at the summit lit the powder magazine — the entire garrison and their families were killed in the explosion. Of 30,000 Psariots before the revolution, only a few hundred survived. The poet Dionysios Solomos wrote the famous epigram: 'On Psara's black ridge, Glory walks alone.' Today Psara is a quiet fishing island of 450 residents, with black pebble beaches, very few tourists, and a palpable weight of history.

Μέρα 1: Black Ridge & the Village

Διανυκτέρευση: The village · Οδήγηση: 10 km, ~20 min

  1. 09:30 · Harbour Arrival
Arrive at the tiny port on the south coast. The village is directly above it — low stone houses, blue shutters, surprisingly few people. Ferries to Psara are infrequent (a few times a week from Chios).
  2. 10:30 · Black Ridge Monument
The site of the June 1824 explosion that ended the Greek population of Psara. The monument at the summit is inscribed with Solomos' famous epigram. One of the most haunting historical sites in Greece. The climb from the village takes 40 minutes and the views over the Aegean are vast.
  3. 12:00 · Church of Agios Nikolaos
The main village church — houses relics and icons saved during the 1824 catastrophe. The church itself was rebuilt in the 19th century.
  4. 13:30 · Lunch — Harbour Taverna
Three small tavernas operate on the harbour. Fresh fish and traditional Aegean dishes at unhurried, very reasonable prices. The lobster here is excellent and about a third of the Mykonos price.
  5. 15:30 · Limnos Beach
The best beach on Psara — black pebble, crystal clear water, a handful of sunbeds and a single beach bar. The west-facing location makes this one of the best sunset beaches in the NE Aegean.
  6. 18:00 · Departure
Ferry back to Chios (~3-4 hrs) or Piraeus via other islands. Most visitors combine Psara with Chios or Lesvos.
