Hydra — Hydra Harbour

Hydra bans all motor vehicles — the only way to move is on foot, by donkey, or by water taxi. The result is the most peaceful town in the Saronic gulf: a crescent harbour of stone mansions, an artists' community that includes Leonard Cohen's former house, and rocky swimming platforms instead of sandy beaches. Come here for atmosphere, not sunbathing.

Good for

  • Travellers who want atmosphere, art and absolute quiet — no cars, no scooters, ever
  • Couples and creatives drawn to a stone harbour town with a long artists' history
  • Anyone happy to swim off rocks rather than lie on sand

Maybe skip if

  • If you want sandy beaches and a beach-bar scene — Hydra has neither
  • If you travel with heavy luggage and expect a taxi; everything moves on foot or by mule

When to Visit

Hydra is the no-cars island — donkeys, water taxis, mules carry everything. Aristocratic 19th-century captains' houses, an art scene (DESTE Foundation each summer), legendary Easter. Best May-October; the chora is busy weekends year-round because it's an Athenian favourite. Easter Saturday's Epitaphios procession into the sea is unforgettable.

Jun
Day-trippers from Athens but manageable, the donkey paths to Vlychos and Kamini walkable in daylight, the artists' galleries (Hydra School especially) open. The realistic best month.
Jul
Hot, weekend Athenians arriving in waves. The harbour heaves at lunch and dinner; the upper Chora alleys stay calmer. Donkey paths fine before 10am or after 5pm.
Aug
Yachting peak — the small harbour overflows with megayachts, taverna prices doubled, the donkey-path beaches (Vlychos, Bisti) packed shoulder-to-shoulder. Hydra's appeal is the quiet; August removes it entirely.
Sep
Reward — yachts thinning, weekenders winding down, the donkey paths walkable again in daylight, the cliff-jumping platforms at Spilia returning to locals. Hydra returns to itself.

2-day itinerary for Hydra

Day 1: Hydra Town & Vlychos

Overnight: Hydra Town · Drive: 5 km, ~45 min

  1. 09:00 · Hydra Harbour
Arrive and settle into the rhythm. No cars means no noise — just donkeys carrying luggage up the lanes. The harbour is one of the most beautiful in Greece.
  2. 10:00 · Historical Archive Museum
Small but excellent museum in a neoclassical mansion on the harbour — the story of Hydra's extraordinary role in the Greek War of Independence. The island provided more ships than any other.
  3. 11:30 · Spilia Swimming Rocks
The town's swimming spot — rocky platforms right below the Spilia café. Crystal clear water and cliff-jumping. 5 minutes from the harbour.
  4. 13:30 · Lunch — Castello Kamini
Harbourfront taverna in the tiny fishing village of Kamini. The grilled octopus and the view are both excellent. 15-minute walk from the main harbour.
  5. 15:30 · Vlychos Beach
Pebble beach 30 minutes walk along the coastal path. Clear water, sunbeds, and the excellent Taverna Marina right behind the beach. The last beach reachable on foot.
  6. 20:30 · Return to Hydra Town
Walk back along the coast path or take a water taxi (10 minutes). The harbour at twilight is the postcard image of Hydra — find a table at one of the seafront tavernas.

Day 2: Bisti or Mandraki & Departure

Drive: 8 km, ~20 min

  1. 10:00 · Bisti Beach
Secluded pine-fringed pebble beach on the west coast — accessible only by water taxi or beach boat from the harbour (20 min). A diving club operates here.
  2. 13:00 · Hydra Town Evening
Return to town for lunch. Walk the upper lanes to find Leonard Cohen's house (No. 10 Merkouraki lane). The antiquarian bookshops are excellent.
  3. 16:00 · Hydra — Departure
Ferry to Piraeus (90 min) or to the other Saronic islands.

Amygdalota
Soft, conical almond sweets dusted with powdered sugar — Hydra's defining confection. Dolce in the harbour and Tsangaris bakery are the classic sources.
