Our verdict
Chania and Rethymno are both Venetian-Ottoman harbour cities on Crete's north coast, often discussed as alternatives by travellers choosing a Cretan base. The truth is they complement each other more than they compete.
Chania is the larger and more polished — a fuller dining scene, a more dramatic old harbour, and the better gateway for the famous western Crete excursions (Balos lagoon, Elafonisi pink-sand beach, Samaria Gorge). It draws more visitors and prices have risen accordingly. Rethymno is smaller, less crowded, and arguably more atmospheric in its old town — a compact warren of Venetian houses, a Fortezza castle dominating the skyline, and the fewer tourists per square metre that come from being on the way to somewhere else.
Choose Chania if you want the best of western Crete and don't mind the busier atmosphere, particularly for a first-time Crete visit. Choose Rethymno for a quieter base — equally beautiful old town, easier to find authentic local restaurants, and well-placed as a midpoint if you plan to drive both east and west.
