Our verdict
Corfu and Kefalonia are the two flagship Ionian islands and they offer fundamentally different versions of "the lush green Greek island." Corfu is older, more cosmopolitan, with a longer tourist history that has produced a refined town centre and well-developed coastal infrastructure. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town reflects centuries of Venetian, French and British rule, and the island has a literary character — Lawrence Durrell, Edward Lear and Gerald Durrell all wrote affectionately about it.
Kefalonia is younger as a destination, larger, and visually more dramatic — Myrtos Beach with its white cliffs is one of the most photographed beaches in Greece, and the island's mountainous interior produces serious local wines (Robola) and remarkable mountain villages. It is the wilder, less polished of the two.
Choose Corfu for a sophisticated week with cultural depth, good food, and access to nearby islands like Paxos. Choose Kefalonia for natural drama, road trips through pine forests, and one of the most striking coastlines in Greece. Couples often prefer Corfu; families and active travellers often prefer Kefalonia.
