Our verdict

Both are small Cyclades islands favoured by travellers who have done the larger ones and want something quieter. They differ in landscape and tempo.

Milos is the geological showcase — its volcanic origins produced the lunar formations of Sarakiniko, the red cliffs of Paliochori, the painted boathouses of Klima, and the kayaking-only sea caves of Kleftiko. It has serious activity options and remarkable beaches, but tourist numbers have grown substantially in the past five years and high season is no longer quiet. Folegandros is half the size and a fraction of the visitors. Its Chora sits high on a cliff edge, almost theatrical, and the island's appeal is precisely that there is little to "do" beyond walking the coastline, swimming at Agali, and eating simple food.

Choose Milos if you want exceptional landscape and beach variety with reasonable infrastructure. Choose Folegandros if you want stillness — the smaller, slower, less photographed version of the same Cycladic spirit.
