Our verdict

Hydra and Spetses are the two most-discussed islands of the Saronic Gulf, both reachable from Athens in under two hours. They share a refined character and an upper-middle-class Athenian summer-house tradition, but they differ meaningfully.

Hydra has banned cars. The entire island operates on donkeys, fishing boats, and walking — which gives the harbour town an extraordinary atmospheric quality. The harbour itself is one of the loveliest in Greece. The catch: the island is small, beaches are mostly modest, and getting around requires effort. Spetses is larger, allows limited car traffic, and has better beaches and broader infrastructure. It feels more comfortable as a longer-stay destination.

Choose Hydra for a short, atmospheric escape — two or three nights, with the harbour and walking culture as the point. Choose Spetses for a longer stay, beach-focused trips, or if you're travelling with family who would prefer easier movement between locations.
