Our verdict
Mykonos and Ios occupy the same role in the Cycladic ecosystem — the party islands — but at different price points and different ages.
Mykonos is the international luxury party island: thousand-euro hotel rooms, beach clubs with table-service champagne, restaurants where reservations are essential weeks in advance. The clientele is moneyed thirty-somethings and serious wealth. Ios is the budget-travel party island, historically a backpacker route, now a destination for university-age travellers from across Europe. Its main town becomes an outdoor club after midnight, prices are a fraction of Mykonos's, and the energy is genuinely younger.
Choose Mykonos if your party context is luxury hospitality and you have the budget. Choose Ios if you're in your twenties, travelling on a normal budget, and want the party atmosphere without the velvet-rope element. Mylopotas beach on Ios remains one of the best swimming beaches in the Cyclades regardless of nightlife considerations.
