Our verdict
Ios and Paros sit close together in the Cyclades but cater to very different travellers. Paros has positioned itself as the sophisticated mid-Cycladic base — Naoussa's restaurant scene, varied beaches on all four coasts, excellent ferry connections, and the broadest range of accommodation in the islands. Ios is a smaller, more singular destination, historically defined by its party reputation but increasingly known for one of the best swimming beaches in Greece (Mylopotas) and a beautifully preserved Chora.
Ios's reputation gap is real and worth understanding. Its 1970s and 1990s legacy gave it a "drunk-nineteen-year-olds" image that no longer reflects the place: the cliff-top Chora is exceptional, the Homer's-tomb walk at Plakoto is one of the most atmospheric sunsets in the Cyclades, and the beaches stand among the best in Greece. The party scene exists but is now one element among many.
Choose Paros for variety, sophistication, and longer stays — particularly if you're travelling with family or want a base for ferry-hopping. Choose Ios if you want a more intense, concentrated Cycladic experience — fewer destinations on one island, but each of them stronger.
