Our verdict

Karpathos and Rhodes are the two largest islands of the southern Dodecanese, and they could not be more different in development and character. Rhodes is the regional capital — a UNESCO-listed medieval city, the cliff-top acropolis at Lindos, an international airport with direct flights from across Europe, and a fully developed tourist infrastructure along its eastern coast. Karpathos sits just to the south, similarly long and mountainous, but has stayed remote — its mountain villages still wear traditional dress at festivals, the northern village of Olympos remains a working window into pre-industrial island life, and the beaches are some of the wildest in the Aegean.

Rhodes is the easier trip; Karpathos is the more singular one.

Choose Rhodes for a first Dodecanese visit, history and archaeology, or any trip where you want serious infrastructure and easy access. Choose Karpathos for travellers who have already done the famous islands and want something authentically traditional — a place where you have to drive to find the best beaches, where the women in Olympos still bake bread in communal ovens, and where the wind makes the southern coast one of the world's premier windsurfing destinations.
