Our verdict
Kefalonia and Zakynthos sit beside each other in the Ionian and are often compared by travellers who don't know either well. The difference is significant.
Zakynthos's calling card is Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach — one of the most famous beach images in the world, accessible only by boat. The southern resort coast around Laganas has been heavily developed for British and Italian package tourism, with a corresponding nightlife scene that defines much of the island's reputation. The island has genuine charms beyond this (the western cliffs, the loggerhead turtle nesting beaches) but its character has been substantially shaped by mass tourism.
Kefalonia is larger, less developed, and considerably calmer. Myrtos is its equivalent of Navagio but without the crowds. The interior is mountainous and worth driving. There is no Laganas equivalent — nightlife is modest by Greek-island standards.
Choose Zakynthos if Navagio is non-negotiable, you're travelling with friends in their 20s, or you want a fully-developed package experience. Choose Kefalonia for almost any other reason — families, couples, active travellers, anyone wanting Ionian beauty without the crowds.
