Our verdict

Rhodes and Kos are the two largest and best-known Dodecanese islands, both with international airports, both with strong tourist infrastructure. They differ in scale and character.

Rhodes is the larger and historically richer. Its medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the best-preserved walled crusader city in Europe — and the island has serious archaeological depth (Lindos acropolis, Kamiros, the deer of the Knights). It is also genuinely huge, with a full day's drive between the north and south ends. Kos is smaller, flatter, and shaped more around beach resorts and cycling — its town is pleasant but less dramatic, and its main attractions are its long beaches and the Asclepion, ancient birthplace-site of Hippocrates.

Choose Rhodes for a culturally substantial trip — first-time Dodecanese, history-focused travellers, week-long stays with car exploration. Choose Kos for relaxed beach-focused trips, families with young children, or as an easier gateway for hopping to smaller islands like Nisyros or Kalymnos.
