Our verdict

Milos and Sifnos are both small Cyclades that experienced travellers turn to after exhausting the famous islands. They differ profoundly in character and appeal.

Milos is the geological showpiece — a volcanic landscape that produced the lunar formations of Sarakiniko, the red iron cliffs of Paliochori, the painted boathouses of Klima, and the sea caves of Kleftiko. It is the island for visual drama, kayaking expeditions, and beach variety unmatched anywhere in the Cyclades. Sifnos is quieter and more cerebral — a four-thousand-year tradition of pottery, a string of beautiful Venetian-era villages, and the strongest food scene in the islands. The Nikos Tselementes legacy (Sifnos produced Greece's first modern celebrity chef) lives on in restaurants from Apollonia to Vathy.

Choose Milos for landscape, photography, beach exploration, and outdoor activity. Choose Sifnos for food, walking between hilltop villages, and a slower rhythm. Both are excellent; the choice depends on whether you want to look at the island or eat your way through it.
