Our verdict
Mykonos and Naxos are neighbours geographically but worlds apart in character. Mykonos is the Cyclades polished for international consumption; Naxos is the Cyclades as Greeks themselves enjoy them.
Mykonos's strengths are its beach clubs, its restaurants, and its meticulously maintained tourist infrastructure. Its weaknesses are its prices and the relentless intensity of high-season crowds. Naxos is the largest Cycladic island, with a long western beach coastline, a Venetian-walled old town, mountain villages still working their olive groves and vineyards, and prices that allow normal travellers to stay a full week without remortgaging.
Choose Mykonos if you specifically want the curated party-luxury experience. Choose Naxos for almost any other Cycladic priority: families, week-long stays, food culture, hiking, or simply spending less. Naxos is also a far better base if you plan to ferry-hop, with daily connections to most of the Cyclades.
