Our verdict

Mykonos and Rhodes both attract large international visitor numbers, but for almost entirely different reasons. Mykonos is a single-purpose island — a small Cyclades that has perfected the luxury party-and-beach formula and charges accordingly. Rhodes is a substantial Dodecanese island with genuine historical weight, including the best-preserved medieval walled city in Europe and the cliff-top acropolis at Lindos.

Mykonos rewards short, intense stays; Rhodes rewards longer trips where you can drive between its very different regions. Mykonos has refined hospitality but limited variety; Rhodes has variety but more uneven quality across its tourist infrastructure.

Choose Mykonos if the curated beach-club-and-restaurant experience is what you specifically want, and your trip is three to five nights focused on a single high-intensity setting. Choose Rhodes for a longer, more varied trip — particularly if you have any interest in medieval history, ancient archaeology, or simply want a full week without exhausting the island. Rhodes also costs significantly less per night and has an international airport with direct flights from far more European cities than Mykonos does.
