Our verdict

These two Cycladic islands answer different questions. Santorini answers "where is the most extraordinary place I can spend three days in Greece?" Naxos answers "where can I actually live for a week without compromising on anything?"

Santorini's defining feature is its caldera — a volcanic crescent that produces some of the most striking landscapes in the Mediterranean. But the island is small, intensely developed, and shaped almost entirely around the tourist experience. Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades, with its own farmland, mountain villages, and an exceptional sweep of beach along its western coast. It feels like a real place that happens to receive visitors, rather than a place built for them.

Choose Santorini for a short, photogenic trip — three or four nights, ideally as a couple, with at least one sunset reservation booked weeks in advance. Choose Naxos if you have a full week, want a beach base, are travelling with family, or value variety: ancient Sangri, the Tragea valley, Apollonas in the north, and the dunes of Plaka all sit on the same island. Naxos also costs noticeably less.
