Halki

The painted harbour, the abandoned medieval Chorio above it, and a boat day to the western beaches.

Overall rating: 3.6/5 · 28 km² · 478 residents

Halki (also written Chalki) is a small island just off the west coast of Rhodes — 30 km of coastline, 500 residents, one settlement. The harbour, Emporio, is one of the prettiest in the Dodecanese: a row of restored neoclassical mansions in pinks, yellows and pale blues, originally built by sponge merchants in the 19th century. After the sponge industry collapsed most of the population emigrated to Tarpon Springs, Florida, leaving the houses to fall down; UNESCO funded a restoration in the 1980s and the result is the harbour you see today. There are essentially no cars — the island has one road, a few municipal vehicles, and bikes. Most visitors stay 2 nights: a slow day in the harbour, a boat trip to one of the beaches, an evening on Tarpon Springs Boulevard (the main waterfront strip, named for the émigré community).

2-day itinerary for Halki

Day 1: Emporio Harbour & Old Chorio

Overnight: Emporio · Drive: 5 km, ~15 min

  1. 10:00 · Emporio Harbour
Arrive by ferry from Kamiros Skala on Rhodes (90 minutes, twice daily) or the small Dodekanisos Seaways catamaran. The first sight of the harbour as the ferry rounds the headland — a neoclassical amphitheatre painted in pastels — is the moment the island earns its reputation. Walk a slow lap before doing anything else.
  2. 11:30 · Agios Nikolaos Church
The main church on the harbour, with the tallest bell tower in the Dodecanese (38 m). Black and white pebble mosaic floor in the courtyard, intricate marble carvings inside. The bell tower is climbable on certain days; ask at the church door.
  3. 13:00 · Old Chorio (Medieval Capital)
The original capital, abandoned in the 19th century when the population moved to Emporio for the sea trade. A 4 km walk uphill from the harbour (or short drive on the only road) — ruined houses, a small Knights' castle on the summit, and views over both coasts. Best done in the late afternoon when the heat lifts. Bring water; there's nothing up there.
  4. 16:00 · Pondamos Beach
The closest beach to Emporio — 10 minutes' walk west along the coast road. Coarse sand and pebbles, calm water, a single beachfront taverna (Nick's). Sunbeds available. Most island visitors come here at least once.
  5. 21:00 · Dinner — Magefseis (Tarpon Springs Blvd)
One of the better tavernas on the harbour strip. Try the local goat in tomato sauce or whatever fish came in that day. The waterfront strip is officially named Tarpon Springs Boulevard after the émigré Halki community in Florida.

Day 2: Boat Day — Western Beaches

Overnight: · Drive: 0 km, ~0 min

  1. 10:30 · Boat Departure — Emporio
The west-coast beaches are reachable by foot via long mountain paths, but the standard way is by boat — small caïques leave the harbour around 10:30 and return at 16:00. Buy your ticket the night before from one of the boats moored on the strip; €15–€20 per person.
  2. 11:30 · Trachia Beach
A double-sided beach on a narrow isthmus on the south coast — sand and pebbles on both sides, depending on which way the wind is blowing one of them is always sheltered. No facilities. Often the first stop on the boat circuit.
  3. 13:30 · Areta Beach
The most beautiful beach on Halki — a deep narrow fjord-like bay flanked by tall cliffs, with a small pebble beach at the head. Boats anchor in the bay; you swim in. The water clarity is exceptional. Take a packed lunch — there's nothing here.
  4. 15:00 · Alimia Islet (Optional)
Some boats include a stop at the abandoned island of Alimia just north of Halki — a former Italian submarine base in WWII, now uninhabited. The harbour bay has crystal water and ruined Italian military buildings on shore. Worth it if your boat goes; otherwise skip.
  5. 17:30 · Departure
Last ferry to Rhodes typically leaves around 17:30 — check the schedule, it changes. If you're staying another night, the harbour at sunset turns gold and is the best time of day for photographs.
