Lesvos — Mytilene Town

Greece's third-largest island is one of its most rewarding. Lesvos combines exceptional natural diversity — volcanic landscapes, pine forests, salt marshes — with a deep cultural heritage stretching from ancient Sappho to the Nobel Prize-winning poet Elytis. It rewards slow travel.

When to Visit

Lesvos is the third-largest Greek island — far too big to feel touristy. Olive groves cover 30% of the island, and the food (sardines from Kalloni, ouzo from Plomari) defines the experience. Best May-October. The Petrified Forest is open year-round. Cruise tourism is minimal — this is an island for people who travel.

Sea warm enough for the south coast beaches, the Petrified Forest walkable without midday heat, the ouzeries of Plomari (try Barbayanni for distillery tours) all open. The honest best month.
Jul
Hot, peak Greek summer. Skala Eressou (gay-friendly beach town) busy, Molyvos castle queue in midday sun. Inland villages and the western volcanic zone stay much cooler.
Aug
Peak season — Mytilene heaving, charter flights from Athens daily, the popular beaches packed by 10am. Lesvos is huge (1,633 km², third-largest); the north (Petra, Sigri) and the central plain stay manageable.
Sep
Best month — ouzo season approaching, the olive harvest preparations starting, charters thinning, the salt pans at Skala Polichnitou flamingo-thick. The Lesvos that the residents prefer.
