Samos
The Heraion sanctuary, the Pythagorion harbour, Mount Kerkis and the best beaches of the south coast.
Samos is the birthplace of Pythagoras and Epicurus, and home to the Heraion — one of the most important ancient sanctuaries in Greece. The island is unusually green for the Aegean — forested mountains, vineyards producing the famous Muscat wine, and a lush landscape that contrasts with the rocky Cyclades nearby. The east coast is only 1.4km from Turkey. Less famous than it deserves to be.
Getting there
Domestic + summer charter airport — Aegean, Sky Express. Three ports: Vathy (main, Piraeus), Karlovasi (alternate Piraeus arrival, closer to west Samos), Pythagoreio (south, Dodecanese & Turkey connections).

Tip: Pick the port that matches your base — Karlovasi if west, Vathy if east, Pythagoreio if south.
When to Visit
Samos is mountainous, green, wine-famous (the sweet Muscat) and lies a kilometre from the Turkish coast. Best May-October. The August panigiri at the Monastery of Vronta is a serious affair. Karlovasi and Vathy live year-round; the smaller villages close from November.
