Milos
Sarakiniko at sunrise, Kleftiko by boat, the fishing villages of the north coast and the golden beaches of the south.

Milos has been called the most beautiful island in Greece, and the beaches make a strong case. Volcanic geology has produced an extraordinary variety — white lunar rock formations at Sarakiniko, inaccessible pirate sea caves at Kleftiko, golden sand framed by coloured cliffs at Firiplaka, and over 70 other coves. Add the painted fishermen's houses at Klima and the 2nd century BC Venus de Milo (found here, now in the Louvre), and Milos rewards every day you give it.
Getting there
How to get to Milos island, Greece: three options from Athens. Fastest is the domestic flight from Athens (ATH) to Milos (MLO) — 40 minutes, typically €60–120 one-way, two to three daily flights with Olympic Air in summer.

By ferry, fast catamarans (Seajets, Golden Star) leave Piraeus port and reach Milos in 3 to 4 hours, around €60 per passenger; conventional car-ferries take 6 to 7 hours for about €40 and are the only option if you want to bring a car. All ferries dock at Adamas, the main port and town. In summer (June to September) there are daily departures; in winter the schedule drops to 3–5 sailings per week. Book ferries on Ferryhopper or directly with the operators; in August, book at least 2 weeks ahead.
Tip: Combining Milos, Greece with Santorini? A direct seasonal fast ferry (about 2 hours) beats routing back through Piraeus. For a single trip with no car, fly in and ferry out — the flight saves a day and the slower return lets you experience the Cyclades sea route.
When to Visit
Milos got famous on Instagram in the last five years and August is now too busy. The sweet spot is late May through June — the volcanic colours pop in soft light, the boat tours run, and Sarakiniko isn't covered in selfie sticks. September is also lovely.
4-day itinerary for Milos
Day 1: Sarakiniko & the North
- 09:00 · Adamas (Port)
Arrive and pick up your rental car or ATV — essential on Milos. The port has good cafes for breakfast before heading out. - 09:30 · Sarakiniko Beach
The most iconic beach in the Cyclades — bone-white volcanic rock formations carved into a lunar landscape, dropping into deep turquoise water. Go early for the best light and to avoid the midday crowds. Walk the full extent of the rocks — there are multiple swimming spots and a small cave beach. - 11:30 · Papafragas Sea Caves
10 minutes from Sarakiniko — a natural sea arch and swimming channel cut into the white volcanic rock. You swim through the narrow channel into a completely enclosed rock pool. One of the best swimming spots on the island. - 13:00 · Firopotamos Village
Charming fishing village with brightly painted syrmata — the ground-floor boathouses that are unique to Milos. Lunch at the small taverna on the beach. The church on the headland is perfectly photogenic. - 17:00 · Plaka Village
The hilltop capital of Milos — a beautiful Cycladic village with a Venetian kastro and extraordinary sunset views over the caldera and the western sea. The best sunset viewpoint on the island. - 20:30 · Dinner — Mákris (Domes White Coast, Mytakas)
On the north coast at Mytakas, Mákris Milos at Domes White Coast won ★ in the FNL Best Restaurant Awards 2026 (Modern Bistro). Black Angus beef, creative tasting menu, dramatic clifftop setting. Reserve ahead. - 21:00 · Return to Adamas
Drive back down to Adamas (about 10 minutes from Plaka). The waterfront tavernas around the harbour are the social heart of the island in the evening — Mikros Apoplous and the seafood places along the dock are favourites.
Day 2: Kleftiko Boat Trip
- 09:30 · Adamas — Boat Departure
Full or half-day boat tour from Adamas port — essential for Kleftiko and the inaccessible west coast beaches. Book the night before. Most tours stop at 5-6 locations. - 11:00 · Kleftiko Sea Caves
The finest sea cave complex in the Cyclades — white rock arches, sea caves and hidden coves at the southwestern tip of Milos. Former pirate hideout. Swim through the caves and snorkel the crystal water. The rock formations are extraordinary. - 13:30 · Gerakas Beach
White sand and turquoise water in a cove only accessible by boat. One of the finest beaches on the island — boat tours stop here for lunch and swimming. - 15:30 · Tsigrado Beach
Tiny secluded beach reached by descending a rope ladder through a crack in the cliffs. The access is the adventure — the beach below is tiny but beautiful. Also accessible by boat. - 20:00 · Return to Adamas
Drive back to Adamas (about 25 minutes from the south coast). Salt-crusted, sun-tired, ready for dinner along the harbour.
Day 3: South Coast Beaches
- 10:00 · Firiplaka Beach
The best swimming beach on Milos — golden sand framed by dramatic yellow, pink and white volcanic cliffs, with shallow turquoise water. Organised with sunbeds. The most beautiful sandy beach on the island. Go before midday to get a sunbed. - 13:00 · Paleochori Beach
Sandy south-coast beach with a unique feature — natural thermal vents bubble through the volcanic sand, warming the water and the beach itself. Several good tavernas directly on the beach. - 16:00 · Klima Village
The most photographed fishing village in the Cyclades — two-storey syrmata with boats at ground level and brightly painted upper rooms. A 15-minute drive from Adamas. Walk the seafront at golden hour. - 18:30 · Pollonia
Small resort village on the northeast coast with a sandy beach, good restaurants and ferry connections to Kimolos. Stay overnight here for an early start. - 21:00 · Return to Adamas
Drive back from Pollonia to Adamas (about 15 minutes). Pollonia itself has good food if you prefer to stay — Enalion and Hanabi are local favourites — but most travellers head back to base.
Day 4: Venus, Catacombs & Departure
- 09:30 · Site of the Venus de Milo
The exact spot where the 2nd-century BC masterpiece was found in 1820, near the ancient theatre. A replica marks the site. The original is in the Louvre; a cast is in the local museum in Plaka. - 10:30 · Catacombs of Milos
The earliest Christian catacombs outside Rome — 1st-2nd century AD burial galleries carved into the volcanic rock. Guided tours only. Surprisingly moving. - 13:00 · Achivadolimni Beach
The longest beach on Milos — a long sandy shore on the east coast near Adamas. Protected from the north winds. Good for families. - 16:00 · Adamas — Departure
Ferry or flight from Milos. The ferry back to Piraeus sails past the extraordinary west coast — stand on deck for the view.
