Ammouliani
Beaches and the village on Day 1, the Drenia islets by boat on Day 2.

Ammouliani is a 4.5 km² island in the Athos bay between the Sithonia and Athos peninsulas of Halkidiki — the only inhabited island in Central Macedonia. Until 1925 it belonged to the Vatopedi monastery on Mount Athos and was farmed by monks. After the Asia Minor catastrophe, the island was granted to refugees from the Sea of Marmara, who brought their fishing knowledge and their cooking with them. The 600 year-round residents live in one village around the port. The water is clear, the sand is golden, and Mount Athos rises directly across the channel — the view at sunset is unlike anywhere else in Greece. Combined with the Drenia islets just off the southeast coast, two days here goes a long way.
Getting there
No airport. No Piraeus ferry. Reach Ammouliani from Tripiti (Halkidiki, ~7h drive from Athens or fly Thessaloniki + 2h drive) — frequent shuttle, ~15 minutes, takes cars.

Tip: Closest Greek island to Mt. Athos — view across the channel is the reason to come.
When to Visit
Ammouliani is the only inhabited island off the Halkidiki peninsula — close enough to drive-and-ferry from Thessaloniki for a weekend. Beach-fringed, sheltered, no scene. Open mostly May-September; Greek-domestic tourism, almost no internationals. Best June and September; the channel between the islets is genuinely Caribbean-blue.
2-day itinerary for Ammouliani
Day 1: The Village & the Beaches
- · Ammouliani Port
The main settlement around the port. 15-minute ferry from Tripiti on the mainland (€3.50/person, €10/car, hourly in summer). Tavernas and a small Folklore Museum with relics from the 1925 refugee resettlement. - · Agios Nikolaos Church
1865 church in the central square — built originally for Saint Modestos, with a second floor added later for Agios Nikolaos, protector of sailors. Next to it stands the original 1907 monks' house from the Vatopedi monastery period. - · Alikes Beach
The main beach on the southwest coast, overlooking the Sithonia peninsula. Crescent of golden sand, three beach bars, one taverna, a camping site. Sunbeds free with a €15 minimum at the bar. Busy in August weekends but never overwhelming. - · Karagatsia Beach
2km northwest of the village — wild sandy cove sheltered by tall elm trees (karagatsia in Greek). Some sunbeds, one canteen, otherwise quiet. Better snorkelling along the rocky edges than at Alikes. - · Sunset at Megali Ammos
The southernmost beach with views east to Mount Athos. Golden sand, sunbeds free with a bar order, a small canteen. The Mt. Athos sunset view is the reason you came north — get here in time.
Day 2: Drenia Islets & Departure
- · Boat to Drenia
Drenia (locally 'Gaidouronisia' or Donkey Islands) is a six-islet archipelago off the southeast coast. Reach them by water taxi from Ammouliani port or — better — rent a small boat (no license needed) and sail yourself. Half a day or full day. - · Drenia Main Islet
The largest of the six islets has an organised beach with a beach bar and canteen. Soft white sand and turquoise shallow water. The default stop for organised tours; arrive early to avoid the day-trip crowd from Ouranoupoli. - · Channel Between Islets
The shallow channels between the smaller islets feel like natural swimming pools — sand underfoot, glowing turquoise water, you can wade between rocks. The reason to rent a boat rather than just take the water taxi. - · Lunch — Lefteris Tavern
Family-run tavern back in Ammouliani village — meatballs, mackerel, octopus, live music on weekends. The sort of place that survives because the cooking actually delivers what every island taverna claims.
