Thasos
Northern forests, marble beaches, and ancient Agora

Thasos is the northernmost Greek island — closer to Bulgaria than to Athens — and it looks nothing like the Cyclades. Dense pine and plane forests cover the mountains, rivers feed marble quarries, and the east coast has long white-sand beaches. In antiquity, Thasos was famously wealthy from its gold and marble; today the marble is still exported, and the ancient Agora in the main town is one of the most complete in Greece.
Getting there
No airport. No Piraeus ferry. Reach Thasos from Kavala or Keramoti (mainland N, ~7h drive from Athens or fly to Kavala) — frequent crossings, 30–75 minutes.

Tip: Keramoti is closer to Thasos but Kavala has more ferry options — pick by where you fly in.
When to Visit
Thasos is the northernmost Greek island — pine-forested, mountainous, drivable from Thessaloniki via Keramoti. Eastern European tourism (Bulgarians, Serbs, Romanians) is heavy in summer because the drive is so easy. Best May-October; June and September. Olive oil, marble, honey, the Ancient Theatre and the Aliki double-bay are the highlights.
3-day itinerary for Thasos
Day 1: Thasos Town & Ancient Agora
- 10:00 · Thasos Town (Limenas)
Main port and capital. The old town sits on top of the ancient city — you'll see ancient ruins in people's gardens. - 11:00 · Ancient Agora
One of the best-preserved Agoras in Greece — paved Roman plazas, stoas, Hellenistic temples. Right next to the archaeological museum. - 12:30 · Ancient Theatre of Thasos
15-min climb through pine forest to the 4th-century BC theatre carved into the hillside. Still used for summer performances. - 14:00 · Lunch — Simi Restaurant
Elegant waterfront spot with fresh fish and the best Thasian wine list. - 17:00 · Chrysi Ammoudia (Golden Beach)
Long sandy east-coast beach. Pine forest runs right to the sand. - 20:30 · Drive back to Thasos Town
Drive back along the east coast (about 25 minutes from Golden Beach). Limenas (Thasos Town) has the best night-time scene on the island — a long waterfront with bars, tavernas, and a small ancient agora lit up at the heart of it.
Day 2: Mountain Villages & Marble
- 10:00 · Panagia Village
Traditional stone-built village with slate roofs and a spring running through the main square. Old-world Thasos. - 11:00 · Potamia
Home of sculptor Polygnotos Vagis — small museum in the village celebrating his work. - 13:00 · Aliki Archaeological Site
Ancient marble quarry on the southeast coast. Twin harbors, 7th-century BC temples, quarry cuts visible in the cliff face. - 14:30 · Lunch — Armenaki
Taverna in the Aliki double bay. Fresh catch, grilled over charcoal. - 17:00 · Theologos
Old capital of Thasos, high in the mountains. Traditional stone houses, best preserved village on the island. - 21:00 · Drive back to Thasos Town
Drive back from the mountain villages (about 50 minutes from Theologos). The descent through the pine forest at twilight is quietly beautiful — pull over at a viewpoint if the timing is right.
Day 3: West Coast Beaches
- 10:00 · Limenaria
Second-largest town on Thasos. Working fishing port on the southwest coast. - 11:30 · Giola Lagoon
Natural rock pool carved by the sea — a cliff-enclosed pool you dive into from 3 meters. Must-see on Thasos. - 14:00 · Potos
Lively resort village with a long sandy beach and dozens of tavernas on the promenade. - 17:00 · Marble Beach (Saliara)
Reached by 4x4 or boat. White marble pebbles and turquoise water — the most photogenic beach on Thasos.
