Skopelos — Skopelos Town

Skopelos is the greenest island in the Aegean — almost entirely covered in dense pine, olive and plum orchards. The hilltop town of Skopelos is one of the most beautiful in Greece, with 123 churches climbing the hillside. The island was the filming location for Mamma Mia, and the clifftop church of Agios Ioannis has become a pilgrimage for fans. Quieter and more authentic than Skiathos next door.

Tip: Combine with Skiathos and Alonnisos — they hop on the same line.

When to Visit

Skopelos got famous from Mamma Mia and the Agios Ioannis chapel where the wedding was filmed; bus tours arrive accordingly in summer. The forests, plums, and the chora are the real draws. Best May-October. June and September; mid-August is loud and boatload-y.

Day 1: Skopelos Town

Overnight: Skopelos Town · Drive: 10 km, ~15 min

  1. 09:00 · Skopelos Town
One of the most beautiful towns in the Aegean — 123 churches on a hillside above a Venetian harbour. Walk up through the white lanes to the kastro at the top for views over the whole island.
  2. 10:00 · Kastro of Skopelos
Venetian fortress at the summit of the town with a single surviving church inside. The views over the Sporades are extraordinary.
  3. 11:00 · Folklore Museum

  4. 14:00 · Stafylos Beach
Pine-fringed pebble beach 4km south of town — the closest organised beach to Skopelos Town. Clear water, good taverna, lovely setting.

Day 2: Agios Ioannis & Panormos

Overnight: Skopelos Town · Drive: 35 km, ~45 min

  1. 09:30 · Agios Ioannis Chapel
The Mamma Mia chapel — perched on a sheer rock above the sea on the northwest coast. 112 steps cut into the rock. The view from the top is extraordinary and the chapel itself is beautiful. Go early before the tour groups arrive.
  2. 11:30 · Glossa Village
The second village of Skopelos — a traditional settlement on a hilltop in the northwest with the finest views on the island. Breakfast or coffee at the village square.
  3. 13:30 · Panormos Beach
The finest beach on Skopelos — a sheltered pebble bay framed by pine forest. Crystal clear water and a good beach taverna. One of the best beach settings in the Sporades.
  4. 16:00 · Milia Beach
Wild pebble beach north of Panormos — quieter, backed by dense pine forest, crystal clear water. No facilities, completely natural.

Day 3: Monasteries & Departure

Remote sandy beach in the south — accessible via a forest path or by boat. Fine sand, clear water, almost always quiet. One of the few sandy beaches on the island.
  3. 16:00 · Skopelos Town — Departure
Ferry to Skiathos, Alonnisos, Volos or Thessaloniki.

Festivals & Events

Mamma Mia! summer (informal)Throughout summer (June-September)
Not an official festival but a phenomenon: Skopelos hosts a steady stream of Mamma Mia! pilgrimages to Agios Ioannis chapel (the wedding scene). Local tavernas screen the films, host themed nights, and run weekly tribute events through summer. The tourism economy runs on it.
